Book Description
Recent conceptualization of depressive, anxious, and related “emotional” disorders have placed an emphasis, rather than on their differences, on their similarities. As a direct response to this, in recent years there has been a shift away from the traditional disorder-specific guide used in the treatment of these disorders and toward treatment approaches that place an emphasis on addressing psychological processes that appear to be common to a number of different types of mental illness. These “transdiagnostic” evidence-based treatments may turn out to be more cost effective, and they certainly have the potential to increase the availability of evidence-based treatments in order to fulfill an essential requirement in the area of public health. The Unified Protocol for Transdiagnostic Treatment of Emotional Disorders (UP), which was developed by Dr. David Barlow and associates, is the transdiagnostic treatment protocol that is the easiest to recognize and the one that is used the most frequently. There is empirical support for the use of this protocol.
Clinicians now have access to a “how to” manual in the form of Applications of the Unified Protocol for Transdiagnostic Treatment of Emotional Disorders (PDF), which details the utilization of the UP in the treatment of a wide variety of psychological disorders that are frequently experienced by adults. Every chapter focuses on a particular type of depressive, anxious, or related “emotional” disorder, and significant transdiagnostic processes are highlighted and discussed in relation to treatment. Case studies are utilized throughout the entirety of the book to illustrate the real-world application of this exclusive cognitive behavioral protocol and to educate clinicians on the nuts and bolts of evaluation, case formulation, and treatment in accordance with a transdiagnostic perspective. Case studies are used to teach clinicians in the nuts and bolts of evaluation, case formulation, and treatment in accordance with a transdiagnostic perspective
