Book Description
The fifth edition of this well-known PDF etextbook, Ecology of Freshwaters, has been updated with full-color illustrations and has undergone extensive revisions. It still offers a comprehensive, readable, stimulating, and authoritative coverage of freshwater habitats, as well as their communities and how they function all over the world. The study will be of tremendous benefit to graduate and undergraduate students, as well as fellow researchers and water managers. Additionally, the lack of jargon and straightforward language should make it accessible to anybody who is interested in the functioning and present state of lakes and rivers.
After teaching and doing research for more than half a century and spanning six continents, Professor Brian Moss makes full use of both his own experience and the vast amount of material that is currently available on the topic of freshwaters. This is the fifth version of his electronic textbook, which, since the first edition was published in 1980, has continuously progressed to reflect the quickly changing nature of both the scientific community and the surrounding environment. As we progress into the Anthropocene epoch and face unprecedented levels of climatic and other changes, it lays increased attention on the role of people in destroying and managing freshwaters. At the same time, it rejoices in the allure of what are left of nearly pristine freshwater environments.
After working in the United States, Africa, and the United Kingdom throughout his career, Professor Dr. Moss has now retired from the University of Liverpool. The International Society for Limnology, of which he served as President from 2007 to 2013, as well as The Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management both honored him with medals for his contributions to the fields of ecology and environmental management. Dr. Moss was also awarded The Ecology Institute's Excellence in Ecology Prize in 2009, and the book that he wrote in order to be considered for that prize, titled Liberation Ecology, was given the best ecology book prize by the British Ecological Society in 2013.
