Book Description
Emotions are a fundamental component of day-to-day living; they have an impact on a person's capacity to work in an adaptable manner and on both intrapersonal and interpersonal processes, such as one's sense of self-worth and the degree to which they are satisfied by their relationships. However, when sentiments are overwhelming, they can become intrusive and debilitating in day-to-day life. This can make it difficult to function normally. Emotional control skills, in general, tend to become more distinct during the course of normal development. When children struggle to handle their emotions, they frequently seek help from adults or resort to manipulative behaviors. When children reach the age of puberty, they develop into more independent individuals who are able to engage in methodical problem solving and make greater use of cognitive strategies (such as reappraisal) when confronted with stressful life events. Although the majority of children and teenagers will successfully navigate these developmental phases by cultivating adaptive coping skills, for some, this marks the beginning of lifelong struggles with emotion regulation and the resulting dysregulation. This is true even though the majority of children and adolescents will successfully navigate these developmental phases.
The document titled “Emotion Regulation and Psychopathology in Children and Adolescents” (PDF) provides information to assist in coping with these challenges, with contributions from eminent experts in the field.
It begins by providing an introduction to the field of emotion regulation in adolescents, touching upon the cultural, organic, social, and developmental points associated with this subject matter. The next section is divided into 4 parts and begins with an overview of the field of emotion regulation in adults.
In section two, we cover a variety of psychological difficulties that are prevalent among adolescents, such as anxiety, depression, and conduct problems. We also talk about the fundamental role that emotion regulation plays in the development, maintenance, and spread of these issues. In addition, the implications of these findings for treatment are discussed in this section, along with the most recent evidence-primarily based intervention strategies.
The third section places an emphasis on the role that emotion regulation plays in particular behaviors and populations. These include children who have been subjected to abuse and neglect, as well as adolescents who engage in nonsuicidal self-harm.
An epilogue is an option for the final section, which also discusses newly emerging fields of study and provides answers to issues of a psychological, theoretical, and empirical nature.
This book is an invaluable resource for anyone working in the field of mental health, regardless of their level of experience: whether you're just starting out or have years of experience under your belt, it will help you comprehend and address the challenges that are becoming more prevalent.
