Japanese at Work is an empirical study that investigates how various language resources are used to accomplish proper workplace role inhabitance and to attain work-oriented communicative objectives in a variety of workplaces in Japan. The study is available in PDF format. Considerations of gender and interpersonal familiarity, in addition to a speaker's orientation toward normative systems for indicating politeness and authority, are considered as being essential components of appropriate role inhabitance.
