Book Description
Japanese at Work is an empirical study that investigates how various language resources are used to accomplish proper workplace role inhabitance and to attain work-oriented communicative objectives in a variety of workplaces in Japan. The study is available in PDF format. Considerations of gender and interpersonal familiarity, in addition to a speaker's orientation toward normative systems for indicating politeness and authority, are considered as being essential components of appropriate role inhabitance. Scholars of workplace discourse and Japanese sociolinguistics, as well as Japanese language teachers and adult students of Japanese, will find this edited collection to be of interest. The research for this collection was conducted only in Japan. It is certain to make an important addition to the cross-linguistic and cross-cultural study of workplace conversation in the context of the increased internationalization that characterizes the twenty-first century.
NOTE: This product only comes with the PDF version of the booklet “Japanese at Work: Politeness, Power, and Personae in Japanese Workplace Discourse.” There are no access codes contained within.
