Book Description

Ozzie Simmons, Jack Trice, and Johnny Bright were all college football players in the first part of the 20th century. They competed for three different universities in the state of Iowa: the University of Iowa, Iowa State University, and Drake University, respectively. The three men, who were all African American, played football during a time when the overwhelming majority of their opponents and teammates were white. Despite this, they were subjected to serious injuries on the field as a result of foul play. This may have been because of their race, their talents, or most likely an unpleasant combination of the two. The document “Moments of Impact” (PDF) outlines their tales and investigates the ways in which the local communities they were previously a part of have forgotten about or recalled the assaults on them over the course of time. The manner in which those recollections have been articulated in a number of commemorations, such as a trophy, a stadium name, and the dedication of a football field, is an aspect that is of particular interest.

Jaime Schultz places an emphasis not just on the political and social processes of cultural memory, but also on the historical and racial contexts that were present during the careers of Richard Simmons, Trice, and Bill Bright. In order to suggest that the racial politics of modern America have generated a need to redress historical wrongs, congratulate Americans on the apparent racial progress they have made, and divert attention from the unrelenting persistence of ideological and structural racism, Schultz develops the concept of “racialized memory,” which is a communal form of remembering that is instilled with racial significance.
