Book Description
Perpetual Suspects (PDF), which is based on Critical Race Theory (CRT), investigates the realities of policing in the United Kingdom from the perspectives of black and mixed-race men and women (UK). It assesses the formation of the suspect as a result of an intersectional examination of class, race, and gender, shedding insight on the ways in which racism and race impact interactions between police and the public. This alternative account to the dominant one questions whether or not the modern “diversity agenda” should be allowed to completely obscure the topic of race. In general, the argument made in this ebook is that bringing racism into the open can disrupt existing power systems and make it feasible for things to change. It is a timely contribution to this significantly under-researched area and will be of interest to academics of Criminology, Law, Social Sciences, and Humanities. It will also be of interest to educators, college students, and those teaching these subjects. Additionally, communities concerned with criminal justice, practitioners in the field, and activists will find it to be of interest.
Reviews
“In the ongoing discussion around racism and policing in the UK, Lisa Long presents a viewpoint that is both fresh and insightful. Her theoretical rigor and impeccable research have resulted in the production of an insightful critical analysis that provides a solid foundation for practitioner reflection and enhanced action. This e-book, which has been written with fervor and is full of knowledge, is a highly important contribution to our understanding, and it deserves to be read by a large number of people. — Ian Law; the Centre for Ethnicity and Racism Studies (CERS); the School of Sociology and Social Policy; the University of Leeds; the United Kingdom
“In this important and timely work, Lisa Long provides a scathing analysis of the current status of policing in the United Kingdom. The documentary “Perpetual Suspects” demonstrates that anti-Black racism is still endemic to contemporary policing and that this has profound ramifications for the lives of black people despite the fact that there has been much discussion about change. This e-book, which draws on the personal experiences of individuals of African descent living in Britain, serves as a rallying cry for all of us to step up our efforts to fight against discriminatory and racist policing. Senior Lecturer at the Carnegie School of Education at Leeds Beckett University in the United Kingdom, Remi Joseph-Salisbury
“This sophisticated, well-timed, and thought-provoking study contributes to ongoing discussions on racial profiling in the police force.” This study stands out from the vast majority of criminological and policing scholarship on this subject because it places an emphasis on the experiences of those who are policed and uses a critical race framework. In the vast majority of these other studies, analyses pertaining to race are rare, if they can even be found at all. The author deserves praise for writing a work that not only includes exciting scientific facts and analysis, but also strives to emphasize steps for a future study agenda. For these reasons, the text deserves to be commended. It is a must-read for educators, university students, activists, and anyone truly interested in confronting the supremacy of both accepted academic orthodoxy on policing and the current harmful impacts of police power. “It is a must-read for educators, university students, activists, and anyone truly interested in confronting the supremacy of both accepted academic orthodoxy on polic Senior Lecturer in Criminology at Leeds Beckett University in the United Kingdom, Waqas Tufail
