In this multi-faceted case study of one advanced institution of adult higher education, the contributors to the volume and the editors of the volume lay out significant challenges that are faced not just by non-traditional post-secondary colleges and universities, but by all organizations of higher education in today's rapidly changing context. They contend that distinctive academic programs offered by nontraditional institutions are among those that are among the most at risk in the current environment of higher education due to the unpredictability of the times we are living in. This viewpoint is based on the belief that nontraditional institutions face unique difficulties in the current unstable environment.
