Book Description

There are books that cover both statistical theory and statistical procedures. Books can be found. This fits neither category. This is a book about statistical concepts and statistical reasoning, as well as their use to public policy and the human sciences, ranging from medicine to sociology. We have included a large number of basic tools, both graphical and numerical, in order to give the concepts some substance and to give the argument some muscle. Working with data provides students with an opportunity to develop their critical thinking skills. However, we have not prioritized technique above conceptualization in any way. Our goal is to educate students verbally rather than through the use of mathematics, to promote conversation and even argument rather than simple computation, although computation will still be necessary in some situations. As can be seen from the table of contents, the scope of the discussion is significantly more extensive than what is typically covered in a single semester of study. We have focused more on the overall picture rather than the specifics in order to maintain the spirit of universal education.

SCC is a textbook despite the fact that it has a more casual tone. It is laid out for methodical study and has a plethora of tasks, the most of which require students to either participate in a discussion or provide their opinion on something. Even admirable people who want to read for enjoyment for no particular reason should look at the exercises as well as the material. It is important for educators to be aware that despite the book's modest mathematics level, the subject matter is far more serious. Because of its focus on concepts and reasoning, this book requires more of its reader than many other method-heavy recipe books.

SCC will make publishing history by utilizing Sapling Plus as its full-course digital solution for the very first time. We will have a fully built library of both error specific feedback and generic feedback tutorial evaluation, linked to the key learning goals of the chapter and drawn straight from the end-of-chapter exercises in the book. This library will be available to our users. In addition, Sapling Plus will serve as the home for our extensive library of educational resources, such as movies titled “Concept and Controversy,” statistical applets, the “Learning Curve,” data sets, and a variety of other teaching and learning oriented tools.
