Book Description

The concept that substantially free-market regimes are incompatible with the fundamental principles of liberal egalitarian justice is one that is widely held within the field of political philosophy. The book Unequivocal Justice (PDF) questions this perspective. According to Freiman's argument, the liberal egalitarian rejection of free-market regimes is predicated on a fundamental analytical error. A common assumption made by liberal egalitarians is that the “public interest” model of political action is ideal, whereas the “private interest” model of behavior in the market and civil society is not ideal. Freiman contends that the application of behavioral assumptions in an asymmetrical manner results in a biased analysis and undermines the ideal theoretical treatments of every major liberal egalitarian principle. These principles include political liberty, economic sufficiency, fair opportunity, and social equality. This e-book reexamines the institutional consequences of each of these principles in nonideal settings, and it does so while making innovative philosophical use of political psychology and public choice economics along the way.
